Fantom Kokeshi

Kokeshi (こけし, 小芥子), are simple wooden Japanese dolls with no arms or legs that have been crafted for more than 150 years as a toy for children. Originally from the northeastern region (Tōhoku-chihō) of Japan, they are handmade from wood.

I casted my grandmother's Kokeshi doll using resin. The doll is kilely a gift from a  student who was staying with us who at the age of 8, and her 20, I thought she was my best friend. I wrote her letters when she left to which she responded and I remember being in her room the day she left and she cried alot. The scupture is a ghostly fantom of that time, my grandmother's house which unfortunately got sold and reminences and information I have from reading and writing about Japan and a musical tradition called 'Gidayu Bushi', songs accompanying the puppet theatre with origins in stories told by blind monks or ex warriors.
