Recipe
Recipe - you’ll have to try to read through this a few times before you move.
Move-draw-sing
Make yourself a comfortable space on the floor. Have something to draw on prepared somewhere close by. Paper/ pens/ pencils, crayons, your choice. Also a recording device.
Have some music at a loud volume, some headphones if you have housemates
(This would usually be preselected music for meditation, relaxation, concentration, your aesthetic, if you have it, if not here is a playlist I created called ‘moving soma’
Lie on the ground, but put yourself into constructive rest, that is feet on the ground as close to bent knees as possible, then let your legs flop out, comfortably, if this isn’t comfortable put your knees together. Now this bit is rather vague I want you to move, you’ll understand. You’ll be suprised how much information gravity gives to you. Use it as a fulcrum of support. You’re going to move in many directions together. Following your instinctual body, for me I follow spots of pain (I always end up on my right shoulder) you may end up, turning, pulling, stretching. curling, putting weight on different parts of the body. if you feel like being still, stay still, there’s no obligation. Another movement process is listening to the sounds and moving with them (if you wish). I’ve curated my sounds to increase in tempo and intensity. This is my moving meditation, as you get more used to this method, you can adapt it to your needs. The playlist lasts around half an hour but 20minutes or as little as you want, will also be fine.
Whenever you feel you have finished your moving meditation, without speaking go directly to your drawing tools. You’re here! However that looks! Mark make (or don’t) in anyway you feel, write if you prefer, sit and be silent. The next but not necessary step is to take the recording device. Press record. Scan the body. Make your notes, make noise, hum or sing, stop when you feel done.
This recipe can be adapted to many if not any art medium that you can have close by. It’s a way of tuning in and coming out.
Good luck.
